music to my ears

dance2.jpgTara was talking earlier about wedding songs. Your first and last dance, with your husband. I started thinking back, and went to my wedding files. Yes, files. I became an organizational whiz- creating tables and documents to make sure everything went without a hitch. Of course, that never happens. At every wedding, there is always some small mishap. At our wedding, I was the mishap. I was so focused on everything going according to plan, and was furious when not only did the best man give Jason his cufflinks from Tiffany’s before the photographer showed up… but, when I entered the Bed and Breakfast, where we were getting married, I found them on the floor. I was devastated. The planner from our venue tried to give me a pep-talk, saying that “that’s a typical man.” I wanted to cancel the wedding, then and there, over a stupid little blue box. In fact, I was text-messaging Jason, telling him that I couldn’t go through with it. Heather, my maid of honor, finally took my cell phone away from me. I was almost to the point of hyperventilating, I was so angry.

dance1.jpgThere were several things that tarnished our wedding day. A drunk family member who pushed one of my friends, my attitude, the bed and breakfast “springing” extra costs on me at the last minute. After I received the pictures from the photographer, I stored them away, not wanting to look at them for a while. Until I could get over my anger, so to speak. Time passed, and I forgave and forgot the trespasses from our wedding day. Now, on days like today, I look at our wedding pictures, and can finally feel lucky when it comes to a man in my life.

Back to music… here was our complete planned list and timeline.

  1. wow. that is so the opposite of my wedding. i didn’t even want a wedding, i wanted to elope to vegas but my mom said i had to have a traditionalesque wedding. so we had it in a lodge, with a non-denominational minister, and the ceremony lasted 12 minutes. and then it was a huge party with everyone pub crawling in my hometown. anyway, we had about 50 people and it was perfect!

our only misshaps were that A) we were still writing our vows at 10 that morning (we were getting married at 1) and B) we forgot our marriage license and my hubby had to run back and dig it out of the moving boxes. i can’t remember what i walked down the aisle to, but the song we walked out was “ice cream” by sara mclaughlin (hey, it was 1998)! there was dancing to frank sinatra and the beastie boys and stuff.

the whole shebang was under 3 grand. all this to say, i did not make lists. i had no idea who was where or what was what. and it was marvelously fun!

  2. I love being married….love my husband and the memories of my wedding day. And yet…planning a wedding was one of the most stressful events of my life. So much detail for one day. It’s worth it though, especially looking back a few years later.

  3. wow. you were organized. i think we had traditional wedding songs during the ceremony, we danced our ‘first’ dance to ‘Somewhere Out There’ — my new hubby picked me up and twirled me in his arms, my feet off the floor at the end.. so sweet. so perfect.. then everyone picked what they wanted from the dj..

people took off clothes, it was embarrassing… i remember all my girlfriends being together and we sang ‘Sin Wagon’ by the Dixie chicks to each other. it was fun…

I dont think I’d do it any different if I could..

  4. Good Gracious! This is like looking at my wedding plans! lol! I had everything planned/timed down to the minute (I was going to walk down the aisle at 2:21 exactly - no sooner no later!) much to the annoyance of my family and friends. They rolled their eyes when I handed out a timed itinerary to every one in the wedding party. Trust me, I was no “Bridezilla” like you see on tv, just determined that everything was going to be perfect just the way I pictured. All the planning paid off and we had a wonderful day. :) No matter what anyone said, I knew that the reason everything went perfectly was because of the obsessive planning.

I also gave my honey cuff links (broadcasting microphones since he was in radio) the night before so he would have them in time for the pictures. :)
